Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart: Discover the beauty and freedom of God-defined sexuality
By Kristen Clark and Bethany Beal
Sex – it’s everywhere and if you look closely, it’s a part of every thing. Each human being walking this planet was brought into the world by the physical act of sex. But how sad is it that we often times forget its origin, purpose and intent?
It’s no new news that sex has driven our culture for the last few decades, but in recent years sex has most definitely become more in our face. The mere statistics of pornography use and exposure beginning in adolescence and escalating into adulthood is both staggering and devastating. Sex is used to sell almost anything and as a result, human beings are becoming more numb and blind to recognize the sanctity of sex and are instead temporarily satiated with cheapened thrills and short-term pleasure.
As someone whose young mind was shaped by culture’s view of sex and of women’s sexuality, I have been bothered by our sex-crazed world for a while now. Especially as my children have gotten older and the world is appearing more off the rails, I have prioritized part of my parenting to focus on what it means to pursue biblical sexuality in a modern world. Culture’s voice is louder, stronger, and way more present and relevant than the bible’s view of sex. If I have any influence in my children’s life, I pray it will be to lead them to choose Jesus as their Savior and to pursue God’s beautiful and pure plans for their individual lives.
Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity to read and review Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart: Discover the beauty and freedom of God-defined sexuality by Kristen Clark and Bethany Beal. Sisters from Texas and the founders of an impactful ministry called GirlDefined Ministries, Clark and Beal are the real deal to communicate a message about God-designed sexuality.
From the first two pages of this book I was hooked. I am from the same generation as the authors so their personal and vulnerable stories brought me back to my confused adolescent years and the many curious thoughts that flooded my mind. I wish I could have had a resource like this written by girls who are totally relatable when I was a teenager. Instead, I was sexually disciplined by the world and my view of sex and of myself was heavily shaped by pop culture.
Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart packs a lot of punch, but is wonderfully divided into four parts which identify the following themes:
- Sexual Brokenness
- God’s Spectacular Design
- Things Every Girl Needs to Know
- Wholeness in Christ
Throughout each section of the book is the underlying consistency that addresses the sexual brokenness of each human being. The reader is continually reminded that no one person is sexually whole or pure this side of eternity because every human brought into this world was born bent and broken. Each person walking this planet struggles with some sort of sexual sin whether it be lust, porn addiction, masturbation, promiscuity, or same-sex attraction, to name a few. God designed each of His children to be sexual beings and He created us to possess sexual desires. God is not a buzz kill in the bedroom but rather made humans as sexual beings to reveal truths about Himself. Understanding God’s overall design and purpose for humanity and sexuality will allow us to experience intimacy with our Maker and ultimately with our earthly spouse as well.
Likewise, in Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart, the reader will discover:
- A biblical understanding of sexuality
- God’s design for love, passion, sex and intimacy
- Acceptance of personal sexual longings within God-ordained boundaries
- How to defeat lustful desires and battles with secret sins
- What the Bible says about porn, masturbation, erotica and same-sex attraction
- Wisdom to pursue a heart of purity
- How to receive complete fulfillment in Jesus Christ alone
I highly recommend this book for teen girls, young women and established women alike. I am 33 years old and have been married for 12 years (saved for nearly 13 years) and I found so much freedom, truth and encouragement in this book. I also would recommend this book for a Christian counselor, any woman in Christian leadership, a female mentor, a mother (or grandmother) of daughters, and any woman passionate about inspiring and supporting a generation to follow God’s beautiful designed for sexuality.
